FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK...
It's been a while since I really sat down and got involved with one of my manuscripts on the go but I've been getting that feeling lately...you know the one. That feeling that comes over you that compels you to sit down and write. To get lost in your words, your story, your characters. I LOVE that feeling. I've been so busy with my kids and my websites and already published books that I've neglected my writing entirely. Ugh. I'm really missing it. What I wouldn't do for a weekend alone to just disappear into my computer and punch out a manuscript (I've done that once...it was decadent!). Anyway, I've decided to set aside so much time a week to my writing and I'm excited about that! Are you neglecting your writing? It's never to late to kick yourself in the pants :)
This newsletter is a day late because we Canadians celebrated our Thanksgiving holiday yesterday. Hope all the Canadians out there had a wonderful weekend!
I've got loads of new call for submissions and freelance jobs listed so have fun!
Stay healthy and enjoy the issue!
Happy Writing,
Krista Barrett, Site Owner

* Hi Krista, Kudos to you and your newsletter. My debut children's picture book entitled, Church Mouse Poor, was recently released by Rain Publishing. Thomas the Mouse sets out on a quest to discover what it means to be as poor as a church mouse. As the story unfolds, Thomas discovers the true meaning of what it means to be rich or poor and revels in the love of his mother, grandmother and the simplicity of his mouse existence. Church Mouse Poor is a beautifully illustrated and wholesome snuggle up book for children ages 4-8 and will become one of the favorites that they will want read over and over again. * Dear Krista, Thanks, so much, for the great newsletters. Wanted to tell you of my article, "Dealing with Critiques, Criticisms & Unkind Comments," that appeared in the September Kid Writer Magazine, and a poem, "This Moment," written for my son, has been accepted by Mom Writer Literary Magazine, for their Spring issue. It's been a while since I've been able to write, and it certainly feels good to get back in the game.Robin Keith, freelance writer, Megargel, TX
* Hi Krista! I just want to say writing is so rewarding. I've had hundreds of stories and articles published, 4+ Books, and have won numerous awards, but now I'm teaching beginning writer's how to get published. When I heard about our community offering education courses, I decided to ask if they needed a writing instructor. They said YES and were absolutely thrilled. The lady that heads up the program is even one of my new students. And it's strange because I have mostly highly educated English teachers in my class, and I didn't even graduate from high school (I later got a GED at 26). But they love the class and say they are learning a lot. So I want to encourage other writers, if I can do it, you can too! Go with your heart and dream big. I'm even teaching online writing courses really cheap. I'm offering the same 8 week course I'm teaching right now for only $30. Thanks for all you do Krista and letting me brag!

Team Bravo leader, Captain Alexander Scott Richter, watches his team disintegrate, man-by-man, while trying to pursue mission objectives. * TITLE: Malignance – The Dark Ages Trilogy II
AUTHOR: Sturmen Krieg
Synopsis: Returning from Panama, and the savaging of Team Bravo, contract DEA operator, Captain Alexander Scott Richter, finds he returns six days late of his daughter’s funeral. With no help from his ex-wife, her new husband, or the police, Richter embarks on a quest to uncover the murderer of the only thing he ever truly loved, his child. As a part of his probe, Richter is confronted by the realization of his own inadequacies as a parent, a father. Delving deep into the underside of New Orleans, he encounters a youth under-culture more savvy, more enduring, than any soldier’s ability to survive a conflict. With help from an unknown shadow collaborator, Richter recklessly stumbles from one disclosure to the next, haphazardly encroaching on the perpetrator of his daughter’s demise.

PAY: $50 - $150
A magazine primarily aimed at teenagers, but some younger and many older readers are subscribers as well. It encourages development of good habits and high ideals of physical, social, and mental health. It bases its editorial philosophy of primary drug prevention on total abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Because it is used extensively in public high school classes, it does not accept articles and stories with overt religious emphasis.
http://www.listenmagazine.org/article.php?id=17
* Charlotte Parent

A monthly parenting magazine with a circulation of 57,000 covering seven counties. Each issue has a theme, as well as regular features and departments. Our audience consists of parents, teachers, child-care providers and other advocates for children ages newborn through teens. We welcome submissions from freelance writers. Our policy is to buy one-time print rights with exclusivity within our region and the right to post the story on our Web site. Reprints of articles from publications outside our region are also considered. We run several feature articles on topics related to our monthly theme. Features require thorough research (citing a minimum of three reliable sources), knowledge of our audience and concise interviewing and writing skills. Articles on topics other than the issue's theme are also considered. We prefer articles and essays with local relevance. Word counts range from 500 to 1,200 words.

* COLUMBIA
PAY: $25
A journal of popular history. It is edited for the general public as opposed to the scholarly one, with the intent of inviting readership through clear, easily followed writing and interesting illustrations. Brevity is valued. The geographic focus of COLUMBIA is on Washington, but its coverage includes all of what was originally the Oregon Country. The topical scope is equally broad. Biographical portraits and articles on 20th-century phenomena are all welcome.
http://www.wshs.org/wshs/columbia/guideln.htm
* Log Home Living
PAY: varies
A monthly magazine for people who own or are planning to build contemporary log homes. It is devoted almost exclusively to modern manufactured and handcrafted kit log homes. Our interest in historical or nostalgic stories of very old log cabins, reconstructed log homes, or one-of-a-kind owner-built homes is secondary and should be queried first. Readership: Our audience is primarily composed of married couples between 30 and 45 years old. They are generally well-educated and very individualistic do-it-yourselfers.
http://www.loghome.com/faqs/faq_writers_guidelines/
* Escape Pod
PAY: $20 - $100
EP is a science fiction magazine. We’re very broad-minded in our vision of the genre’s scope; we follow Damon Knight’s definition, “Science fiction means what we point to when we say it.” We’re not going to pin ourselves down and say we’re only looking for space opera, or cyberpunk, or stories with rigorous scientific background. We want all of those, of course; but in a more general sense we want that which evokes a sense of wonder, or fun, or simply makes us think about our own world in a new way.
http://www.escapepod.org/guidelines/
* Home Education Magazine
PAY: $50 - $100
An award-winning publication for homeschooling families, or for anyone who enjoys living and learning. If you're not familiar with homeschooling, please study our publication before submitting. If you are familiar with homeschooling, you might want to study it anyway, as our primary focus is unschooling, and we take an active political stance for empowering families. http://www.homeedmag.com/contact/writersguidelines.html
* Art Calendar
PAY: $25 - $150
A monthly business magazine for visual artists. Founded in 1986 by a working artist, the publication is still artist-run to this day. The heart of the publication is a section of listings of upcoming professional opportunities to show and sell artwork and to build one’s reputation as an artist (grants, juried shows, residencies, and so on).

We’re looking for creative, well-researched ideas that put a positive spin on protecting the environment. You can pitch us about any subject you’d like, but please do your homework and flesh out a few details about your proposed topic. Vague pitches like "I'd like to do a feature about hybrid cars" will not be taken seriously.
http://www.plentymag.com/guidelines.php
* The Funny Times
PAY: $25 - $60
We are always looking to expose our readers.... to hilarious new material. Everything we publish is funny, so please don't send in something that isn't. We only publish cartoons and funny stories. Cartoons should be "scannable" (good quality photocopies are fine) and stories should be about 500-700 words. There is no limit to our scope and we cover just about everything that can be funny including politics, news, relationships, food, technology, pets, work, death, environmental issues, business, religion, seasonal events and everything else relating to the general human condition.
http://www.funnytimes.com/submissions.php
* In Arts & Sciences magazine
PAY: $.50/word or $250 flat fee for online stories
The types of articles we publish include features of 1,000 to 2,000 words; brief profiles of alumni, faculty and students (Hoos News); news of happenings around the University (Around Grounds); and personal essays (Last Look). Past subjects of articles have included the balancing act of student-athletes; U.Va.’s multi-disciplinary work in southern Africa; the University’s Rare Book School; a first-year Astronomy student; a Drama alumna who’s lighting up Broadway; and the history of vacationing, as viewed by a history professor. Again, we are interested in just about anything as long as it relates to the University and, more specifically, the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. In A&S Online, we publish the same kind of stories that appear in the print magazine. In Oscar, the stories again are similar, but the focus is on academic work. In general, all of our publications have a common goal: to help those in the extended Arts & Sciences family — students, faculty and alumni especially — feel connected to the life of the College.
