FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK...
I'm getting excited! The Surrey Writer's Conference is coming up this weekend - October 19th - 21st. Is anyone from this list attending? I'll be in the tradeshow and look forward to meeting some of you!!
On a personal note, we took the crib out of Maggie's room and swapped it for a 'big-girl' bed. Have to make way for the new baby coming in the spring. She's Dora crazy so I did a little decorating too, with matching Dora bedspread, the works. It's only day 3 and so far we've been up a few times in the night with her. Hoping this passes quickly!
I'm tired! But she loves her 'new' room :)
There are some new questions and answers you might want to check out below. Thanks again to DonnaLee for
providing the information! Some great information for us writers!
It was a quiet week for me on the email front so no brags or connects this week, or book reviews...weird!
Stay healthy and enjoy the issue!
Happy Writing,
Krista Barrett, Site Owner

ASK WWOW
Do you have a writer-related question? Send your question to mailto:editor@writergazette.com Subject line:
"Ask WWOW" and we'll post the answer in our newsletter.
Q: OK, I have a question for you. I have been to hundreds of sites with no real answers so I would like to know seriously and straight forward; "How does one break into ANY type of publishing without self-publishing?" How does one find a publisher if there are not any within hundreds of miles to the writer?
A: Breaking into publishing is as easy as breaking out of a maximum security prison. But people do do it. It takes perseverance. Take a weekly subscription to http://www.literarymarketplace.com Find all the publishers that match your writing (if you are a sci-fi writer don’t send your material to a mystery publisher). Make sure your manuscript is as close to perfect as you can make it. Check their guidelines on the web and follow them exactly (except for simultaneous submissions). Try and get an agent (although that is harder I believe than getting a publisher). Don’t
get discouraged by rejections (my first novel was rejected over 40 times). That is another reason to always have more than one manuscript out there because there is still hope.
Q: Dear Editor: I have written for years but have finally become "courageous" enough to submit some of my writings (greeting cards and inspirational articles). Do I just submit to one magazine, card company, & publisher at the time
or do I submit the same article & such to several companies at the same time? Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Shelia Berry
from playing a percentage game. The more you send out, the more sales you make. However, keep a list of all that you send to and when you get a yes, immediately withdraw the article or story from all other editors without an explanation. If by some miracle two say yes at the same time, explain why you submitted simultaneously. If you date your submission, I suspect you can say something, “Since I hadn’t heard back in over three (ten, thirty-six) months, I assumed you were no longer interested.
Q: Does self-publishing severely limit your ability to promote your book? Publishers consistently compliment my memoir-travel book, 1089 Nights, but then say it's "too small," or not commercial. After a year of this, I was prepared
to self publish and my mentor-editors are begging me to reconsider. Doesn't B&N's Small Press Dept. consider self-published books for sale (their recording suggests they do)? How about Borders? Couldn't an aggressive tour with book signings and radio interviews counter all of this? Thanks for any help.
Ann von Lossberg
A: Self publishing does not limit your ability to promote your book and even if you have a publisher you need to do a lot of your own publicity. You will need an ISBN number and be within the US and with that, most internet bookstores will carry your book. You need to do a lot of legwork including writing and calling independent book stores to offer a reading (also colleges via the writing departments), small radio stations (although fewer and fewer have local programming), newspapers (send out copies to book reviewers). And I also advise following up. As for bookstores, going into the store may get you futher. The chains aren’t necessarily receptive to anything but a big name.

* Montana Outdoors
PAY: $.25 - $.30/word
A bimonthly magazine published by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. It advocates the conservation and sustainable use of Montana’s fish, wildlife, and parks. Though published by a state agency, Montana Outdoors is not a house organ. For one thing, most of the magazine’s budget comes from subscribers, so we have an obligation to provide them with objective information. For another, many “official” government magazines are generally viewed by readers—the few who bother to read them—as biased and boring. And third, our readers are interested in various points of view—even those that challenge the orthodoxy of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Our editorial bent is one of skepticism and curiosity, and we rely on a wide range of sources in our reporting.

* Alaska Magazine
PAY: $.38/word
First and foremost, Alaska magazine is a publication about Alaska for Alaskans by Alaskans A story must have two attributes before it will be considered for publication. First, its focus must be on Alaska. Equally important, the story
must be an example of superlative writing, preferably with a well-developed narrative at its core. Whether it’s a history piece on Aleut baskets or an adventure tale about hiking in the Brooks Range, it should always have an “only in Alaska” aspect.

* Art Calendar
PAY: $25 - $150
A monthly business magazine for visual artists. Founded in 1986 by a working artist, the publication is still artist-run to this day. The heart of the publication is a section of listings of upcoming professional opportunities to show and
sell artwork and to build one’s reputation as an artist (grants, juried shows, residencies, and so on). Articles on the business of art – from the artist’s point of view – appear each month. Categories include self-promotion (components of a professional portfolio, how to write and target an effective news release), exhibition details (how to light a show, how to build a shipping crate), and art law. Articles pertinent to professional artists are also featured. In the “Artists Making a Difference” category, we have featured stories on hospital and nursing home art programs, artists who have involved an entire community in the production of a public art piece, and artists who have created a successful inner-city program that has positively affected many other people. Finally, we like profiles of successful artists – not Chuck Close or Jackson Pollock famous, but the guy next door who makes his living through his art. These profiles are angled at how the artist was able to leave the day-job world and enter full-time art-making. The focus is on different marketing methods s/he used and the steps s/he took to realize his dream.

We are published in North America and distributed worldwide. The magazine is posted regularly on the Web, with archives back to 1979, and also distributed digital form. * Seeking Writer for Dog Lover's Guidebook
Avalon Travel Publishing is seeking a professional writer to author The Dog Lover's Companion to Washington, DC/Baltimore guidebook. THIS IS A CONTRACT POSITION, NOT A FULL-TIME OFFICE JOB. The writer should live in or near Washington, DC or Baltimore or must have very close ties to the area and visit often. The writer must have a dog and have firsthand experience traveling with dogs. He/she should be very knowledgeable about dog-accessible attractions, parks, places to stay, and places to eat and offer advice on the best places to go in the area with a dog. Professional writing experience, especially about dogs, is essential. ATP writers are compensated with an advance and royalty. This guidebook will be in the Dog Lover's Companion format, and the writer selected to be the guidebook author will be responsible for updating the book every three years. Interested applicants should send a resume, a cover letter, up to five relevant clips to mailto:acquisitions@avalonpub.com. In the cover letter, explain why you are the best person to write The Dog Lover's Companion to Washington, DC/Baltimore. We apologize that we may not be able to respond personally to each applicant.
* Story-board writers for Comic books
We are looking for Creative writers to help us convert stories to comic-book frames. We envisage the comic-books to consist of 50 pages each and 5-6 frames per page. You can use the story "Alice in Wonderland" as an example for your reference. So what we need is what is known as a “story-board” where you write the script for every frame – whether it is a description or dialogues. You also determine which characters will be there in every frame. Like good screenwriters, good comic book writers think in pictures as well as words. You visualize the images in their stories, then describe them to artists via scripts. You are expected to give the illustrator a fair amount of direction about how to portray each scene. You are expected to write concise descriptions of familiar people, scenery, or events, as if you were describing them for an illustrator to draw— what’s to be shown and not to be shown, and how it’s to be depicted. This will be a continuous and on-going activity with 20 books being worked on every quarter. Please send us your competitive quotes for carrying out such jobs, along with a timing-plan.
Thank you, Ratna Chatterjee
